This is a heading for their website:

"Hotel X - Tus vacaciones más cercanas!

Would welcome some inspiration for this, please!

Change log

Nov 7, 2019 00:25: Yvonne Gallagher changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Nov 8, 2019 18:56: Daniel Coria changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (4): Darius Saczuk, neilmac, Rick Larg, Daniel Coria

Non-PRO (3): AllegroTrans, Carol Gullidge, Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Rick Larg Nov 8, 2019:
@Comunican I agree with you about the context, that is why I haven’t’ “answered” the question. Since you know more about these hotels than anyone else on Proz, I am afraid I cannot really help you with The Word That Fits here, much as I would like to. I suspect that were this my problem I would think of another similar, but workable slogan, and ask the company if it suited them. I would point out that advertising slogans, like film titles, or poetry, etc. rarely translate EXACTLY.
My point was that the answers to date refer to ‘next’, ‘closer’ and ‘at hand’. Nobody seems to be looking outside the box.
Actually, I meant the debate about the PRO or NON PRO question. I would never show anything but the greatest respect to a debate about the translation of a word or phrase! Been there, Done that sort of thing. No one doubts you are a PRO.
Comunican (asker) Nov 8, 2019:
@Rick Larg Thanks Rick and yes, you're absolutely right, warm and approachable is indeed another possible meaning of cercano, and I have used it in the past. But it doesn't really fit the context here, unfortunately.
And yes, dancing on the head of a pin is right! These trite marketing lines that clients' texts sometimes throw out can take longer than a whole page of more prosaic text (though I'm still only going to earn 4 words worth of money for this one phrase!). Nevertheless, I do spend the time on such things because I am a PRO (!)
Rick Larg Nov 8, 2019:
I can’t help thinking that ‘cercano’ here has a different meaning from ideas of proximity, etc.
“Una actitud cercana” or “Un ambiente cercano” indicates a friendly, warm, attitude or atmosphere, not one near you.
I would suggest, Comunican, that we all think more along lines of ‘friendly’, ‘cosy’, or some other such positive adjective.
BTW I agree that this is a PRO question, though personally I think that this sort of debate is a bit like arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin….
Comunican (asker) Nov 8, 2019:
btw neilmac btw the way, did you see a message I sent you via Proz about two weeks ago? (just want to know if it got through)
Comunican (asker) Nov 8, 2019:
Thanks neilmac Thanks neilmac, I'm amazed that people would think this was a non-Pro question, given the range of possible answers and the various meanings of "cercanas". Clearly "your closest holiday" is meangingless; hence why I asked for people's opinions and "inspiration". It's not as if I asked people to quote from a dictionary! In any case, surely the whole point of a community is to support one another... And lastly, I'm pretty sure that my translation clients, some of whom I've worked for since 2006, would not call me "non Pro".
neilmac Nov 7, 2019:
PRO query I think the challenge of expressing the notion of "cercana" fully in this case elevates the query to PRO status. Fair enough, on the face of it, it seems easy enough to translate, but to fully capture the wordplay of the original calls for not just bilingual knowledge, but also experience of this kind of advertising blurb.
neilmac Nov 7, 2019:
Oops I've probably broken that rule at some time or other. I'll try to curb my enthusiasm in future.
AllegroTrans Nov 6, 2019:

Hotel X - Bringing you closer to your next vacation!

"Vacation" or "Holiday(s)"

The "más cercanas" bit is actually being used to highlight the fact that Hotel X makes your next vacation more affordable/within your reach.

Hope it helps!

Actually, when you say "closer", you could be covering both time & place and money.

ah ok, thanks Daniel. So your reading of cercana is that it is to do with money (more affordable) rather than nearer in time or place...?
