In a translation of a manual from Spanish from Spain to British English, specifically about "High Speed Craft", water-jet-driven catamarans, but I assume this term would be general to any vessel. "Local" as a general word to define any enclosed space, so the engine room, bridge, passenger saloon, baggage compartment, etc. are all "locales":
"El puente de mando, con el mamparo que divide dicho compartimento de los otros locales de la cubierta superior."
"Este compartimento, comprendido entre la cubierta principal y el tope del doble fondo, es un local vacío."
"Evacuar el local en donde existe el incendio."
Words you might use on land - e.g. "place", "unit", "premises" - do not seem right and I am sure there must be a maritime term

space/spaces
I find this frequently in tourism texts referring to accommodation of various types. It appears to be almost synonymous with "area/areas"
It seems also to fit in the catamaran context: "Come sail with us aboard this fine catamaran. Great spaces under the sun or shade. Plenty of seating areas, dining space and open decks for laying about"

It is ambiguous enough to fit the three scenarios.
