Discussion

Dylan Edwards Jan 7, 2019:
"Put on" works as wordplay without being too distracting.

I notice "put on a different thinking cap" as a variation on the well-worn phrase "put on your thinking cap".
Philip Lees Jan 6, 2019:
Pun doesn't work I don't think the play on words really works in English the same way it does in Greek. I would rephrase the sentence to get around that. See my rather banal suggestion below.
Domini Lucas Jan 6, 2019:
@dominates I agree with Nick that this is the meaning as per my agree. Wondering however if the rest of your context would allow for twisting round of the sentence to incorporate some wordplay on phrases using hats such as to hang our hats on . Failing that, I think that crowns, as suggested, incorporates both headgear and dominates.

put on

I don't see a way of translating the wordplay effectively, except by rephrasing and using a more general word:

It's as if our brains were to "put on" a particular way of thinking.

I'm providing a link to the website of Edward de Bono, who invented the Six Thinking Hats. It may be of some help.

agree Domini Lucas : “put on” does actually incorporate a little wordplay to my mind. In any case it sounds good. Valuable link too.

dominates

Επειδή έχει τόσο την έννοια του "κυριαρχώ" όσο και του "δεσπόζω από ψηλά".
Σκέφτηκα και το "tops", αλλά δεν μου πάει πολύ.

When we wear them, it is as if a defined way of thinking is 'capping' our brains.

This can also mean that the hat 'influences' or 'dictates' the way we think.
