Spanish term

pilares del hélix

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Medical report
Any ideas for the pilares part of this sentence?

Many thanks!

Hi Anne - could you post your answer please? Thanks all for your help :)
Anne Schulz Aug 4, 2017:
@Charles The link you gave is not publicly accessible, unfortunately, but for us who pronounce th as t, it is simply the Anthelix :-)<br />The actual root is anti- (the coil opposite the coil), AFAIK.

Charles Davis Aug 3, 2017:
@Anne I think you are almost certainly right: it makes perfect sense from every point of view: it's referring to the crura of the antihelix. The fossa triangularis is between them, and the "base del hélix", mentioned separately in the document, is the the root/crus of the helix. The CAE is the conducto auditivo externo, the EAM or ear canal. All these features that are present must be in the top third of the ear.
Hernan Casasbuenas Aug 3, 2017:
It is one hellix on each ear. Please see the images in the link that was sent.
Ellen Kraus Aug 3, 2017:
Couldnt the pillars be the cells supporting the inner ear ? There are inner and outer PCs = pillar or columnar cells. Combined they form a triangular-shaped tunnel of Corti.
Anne Schulz Aug 3, 2017:
Since they are more than one, I have a strong feeling that these are actually the pilares del antehélix.
philgoddard Aug 3, 2017:
I found a reference to pillars of cartilage. Could that be it? The helix is the prominent rim round the outside of the ear.

Spanish term (edited): pilares del hélix = pilares de antehélix
Selected

crura of the antihelix

Pilares de hélix might just be an error, with the intended meaning being "antehélix" (see Discussion box).

Credits to Charles for supplying the appropriate translation :-)

spine/root/crus of the helix

Different authors give it one of the names annotated above
Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Davis : These terms correspond to the "base del hélix" (more usually "rama") which is mentioned separately, so I don't think it can be this.

pillars/rods of Corti

www.theodora.com/anatomy/the_internal_ear_or_labyrinth.html
The more central of these structures are **two rows of rod-like bodies, the inner and outer rods or pillars of Corti.** The bases of the rods are supported on the basilar membrane, those of the inner row at some distance from those of the outer; the two rows incline toward each other and, coming into contact above, enclose between them and the basilar membrane a triangular tunnel, the tunnel of Corti.

https://www.britannica.com/science/organ-of-Corti
Viewed in cross section, the most striking feature of the organ of Corti is the arch, or tunnel, of Corti, formed by **two rows of pillar cells, or rods.** The pillar cells furnish the major support of this structure. They separate a single row of larger, pear-shaped inner hair cells from three or more rows of smaller, cylindrical outer hair cells. The inner hair cells are supported and enclosed by the inner phalangeal cells, which rest on the thin outer portion, called the tympanic lip, of the spiral limbus.
