(if) work must continue during the termination notice period or compensation paid
I think this refers to working during lay-off notice period or just receiving paid compensation

: Specifically, the employee might work (and be paid) till the last day of employment (aviso prévio trabalhado) OR he might not work but still be paid till the last day of employment (aviso prévio indenizado).

time/hours worked or compensated during the prior notice period

"Getting back to my prior notice analysis, note that my conclusion is roughly compatible with Wayne’s thumbnail summary of Bryan Garner’s view. But bear in mind that what’s at stake is a marginal gain in prose economy and clarity, as opposed to avoiding dispute—I haven’t found any case law regarding whether prior is inherent in the phrase to give notice."

: 'notice' encompasses the concept of 'in advance', so 'prior notice' is redundant.
