Spanish term

lectura histórica de la economía doméstica

I am not sure I am interpreting this correctly and would love to hear some opinions. Thanks to all!

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 21, 2011:
I agree with Carol: "reading" is the most suitable term here.
As someone who has read and translated quite a lot of this sort of stuff, I would caution against the natural temptation to paraphrase the jargon in order make it more natural and accessible to general readers. Such texts are not designed for general readers but for those accustomed to reading cultural theory. If you simplify the language in an explanatory way you tend to undermine the author's intellectual credibility (in the eyes of those who go in for this kind of thing) and make informed readers feel they are being talked down to.

In this kind of writing, the word "economy" is routinely used in ways that can seem quite bizarre to the uninitiated and have nothing to do with money. Take this title, for example: "Good Enough to Eat: The Domestic Economy of Woman-Woman Eroticism". Again, there is a typical postmodern joke here in the use of "domestic economy" (gay female eroticism being a long way from Mrs Beeton, to say the least), and "eat" refers to this in an arch way, with connotations which I will leave to your imagination.
Carol Gullidge Sep 21, 2011:
register although 'reading' and 'interpretation' mean pretty much the same thing, I feel that 'reading' probably fits the register best in this case
Charles Davis Sep 21, 2011:
Hi Lydia Ana's links certainly are interesting, and as she says, the concepts are quite complex. Paradoxically, however, I think the translation is straightforward: the literal version, "a historical reading of the domestic economy of women", is what an English-speaking cultural theorist would have written, in my opinion. "Reading" means "interpretation", of course, and that word would be fine, but "reading" is very often used, as "lectura" is here, for the interpretation of a phenomenon other than a written text. "Economy" is the right word; again, it is being used in a broader sense than conventional economics: that of "the disposition or regulation of the parts or functions of any organic whole; an organized system or method" (dictionary.reference.com). Its original etymological meaning of "household management" (οἰκονομία) is being invoked. "Domestic economy" alone could be misunderstood as either the national economy or home economics in the old-fashioned sense; but "domestic economy of women" will be understood perfectly, and the fact that "domestic economy" has those other meanings provides a kind of wordplay very much in the spirit of modern cultural theory.

Thanks, Ana! Very good links!
anademahomar Sep 21, 2011:
No, I don't think there is anything obvious here, it´s pretty deep stuff. Take a look at this link where 3 types of ecofeminism are described (clásico, constructivista y espiritual) Maybe this will help to clarify. Interesting stuff. I´ve learned something new today so I can go to bed happy ;)

o sea historical interpretation of women´s role/work in the home
Note from asker:
Thanks, Ana. I too think lectura histórica refers to interpretation but I can't quite figure out how to tie it to economía doméstica. Maybe I'm missing the obvious?
Thanks again. This is how I read it too.
Peer comment(s):

agree Altogringo : Re tying in, could "historical interpretation of the domestic/family economy where women have traditionally held sway..." or some variation work? An addition but it may help clarity, at least for me.

Definitely, thanks, Altogringo. We´ll leave the hard part to Lydia :)
agree Charles Davis : "Interpretation" is fine, but so is "reading". This is how authors of this kind write, and their target readers are used to it!

Great comments, Charles, illuminating, thank you much
agree Carol Gullidge : interpretation and reading are synonymous here! But I agree with your interpretation/reading here!

agree philgoddard : A literal translation works perfectly well- I don't see any need to make this more complicated than it is.

Thanks for the confirmation, Phil: my sentiments, exactly: eski :))

neutral Carol Gullidge : I think this is closer to home than the domestic economy - which is a matter for politicians rather than housewives, but I'm not 100% sure, hence the neutral :)

based on a historical reading of women's home economics

The context seems to show the relation has to do with women's historical role managing the economics, or day-to-day finances, in their homes.
Peer comment(s):

agree Carol Gullidge : I think "de la mujer" is part of the term. Here, "reading" and "interpretation" are synonymous

[interpretation] based on how women have managed the household budget throught history

Creo que esta es una opción clara. "household budget" es un término más cercano y en mi opinión se ajusta más a la intencionalidad del autor (las mujeres se han encargado a lo largo de la historia de administrar la economía/el presupuesto familiar). "home economics"/"domestic economy" son términos correctos pero a mi parecer demasiado abstractos (referidos a campos de estudio especializados más que a la cotidianidad del hogar y del día a día).

"interpretation" incluso se podría omitir si le damos un giro a la frase: "[constructivists] explain the relation woman-nature based on/on the basis of how women have managed the household budget throughout history". Es lo mismo que "se basan en la lectura histórica de la economía doméstica de la mujer para explicar..." pero sin ceñirse tanto a la construcción inglesa...

Saludos, Marta.

Una nota, tan que solo aclarar que obviamente en mi entrada "throught" tendría que ser "throughout", tal y como luego indico correctamente en la explicación. Siento el error tipográfico...
