mil gracias!

Discussion

Debora Blake Jul 10, 2011:
Well I'm wondering if there might not be a typo in the first use of Litoral (with capital L).

Didn't most of the immigrants settle in Buenos Aires? BsAs is on the Rio de la Plata which is an immense delta so it has a "coastline" even though it's not on the ocean. It really has a vast waterfront. As for the others who went "al campo", wouldn't that have been the Pampa? I'm referring to the earliest waves of immigrants.

People perhaps spread out (literally) into the Litoral region later (which is a REAL region, see links below). In that case, they would have settled "along the river". But again, not "on the coast".

Here are some links which might be helpful.

hi everybody

i was surfing the net and I found these examples of Littoral, what do you think?
thanks

The Littoral or Northeast of Argentina is the area that includes the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Rios, Chaco, and Santa Fe, and stretches all the way from the border of Brazil down to the border of the Province of Buenos Aires.

Zone of red soils and untouched forests, the littoral area in the Republic of Argentina hides sceneries of exuberant beauty, such as the Iguazú Falls, ...

La Rioja in 1855 had only 88 men to every 100 women, whereas the ratio was reversed in the littoral provinces.

Their populations expanded by a respectable 2 percent per year, despite sending out numbers of migrant workers for the littoral provinces.

coastal area(s) - Litoral

When it is a specific place, don't translate. It is a proper name, in this case a place name.

"litoral" as a common noun is "coastal" or "litorral" but "coastal areas" would work.

disagree Pablo Julián Davis : In Argentina, 'Litoral' does not refer to a coastal (i.e. seacoast) region.

That is what I said in my answer. I said when capitalized, not to translate it and leave it "Litoral". And, when in lower case, as a common noun, then it means a "coastal area". Is it not the coast when it is in lower case as a common noun?
disagree Debora Blake : No. "Coastal areas" would NOT work. Pablo is correct. This region of Argentina is NOT on the coast.

Deborah, in the last two lines, where it states that immigration was all over the "literal" then that is not on the coast either? It is simply a question I have.

disagree Pablo Julián Davis : The Arg. 'Litoral' is not seacoast but rather a fluvial, littoral, river-basin region. Also, I'd suggest that though geographical, this term is a proper name and capitalization should be retained even in transl. Cf US 'Mississippi Delta', 'Great Plains'.

Delta region

Span. 'Litoral' in the Argentine context does NOT work as 'coast/coastal' in Engl. The latter term strongly connotes seacoasts, and the Litoral region of Argentina is not on the Atlantic (or any other oceanic) coast. Alternatives could be 'River Delta' region.

There is an Engl. world 'littoral' but not a popular usage. One could also speak of this is a riverine region.
