Receba nossos cumprimentos

Portuguese to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters

Minha dúvida é a seguinte - Seria correto dizer apenas "our compliments"?

Parece-me muito literal usar "receive our compliments".

Obrigado.

@Andre Once again, more CONTEXT would be helpful here. Is this the closing of the letter? What is the surrounding text?

Yours sincerely

There is no need to translate such formulaic lenga-lengas and any attempt to do so will result in something that will not sit right in English. The correct procedure is to use one of the equivalent EN forms all of which are much much shorter that the PT equivalent.

However, if the phrase appears at the beginning of the letter, as Martin suggests, I would be sorely tempted not to translate it at all as a business letter written in English would not contain such a panegyric, which adds nothing to the meaning of the text.

agree MariaFilomena : totally agree, it seems to me that people are translating word by word

Thanks, I thought the general rule was "only translate if there is no equivalent term/expression", but for that you really have to know the technical area and live the target language.

Please accept our greetings...

Peer comment(s):

Obrigado! Muita lenga-lenga! É cultural...
