Christian book on Evangelism
When Adam and Eve sinned, humanity was separated from its relationship with the Creator. Though the immediate consequence of their sin was expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the real punishment was the loss of intimacy with God. A sinful mankind could no longer experience the enjoyment of the presence of a sinless God. (Isaiah 59:2) There was nothing mankind could do to ***make amends for the sin*** and, since that time, all efforts to make recompense for sin have been fruitless and inadequate. Only the one who has been wronged can truly provide forgiveness.

: yes, I like "compensar por" although it might be repetitive given the next phrase in the sentence.
