thanks - for some reason I missed the point probably because I had my nose in German !
Tsarinaxyz (asker) Apr 30, 2009:
The entire long sentence: Soucieux d'échapper au risque d'un certain intellectualisme parfois rencontré dans l'église et cherchant lui-même à retrouver les intuitions de l'enfance, frère R... n'hésite pas à faire des enfants qu'il rencontre de vrais interlocuteurs.
polyglot45 Apr 30, 2009:
surely there is at least one mistake in the French the sentence or phrase as it stands makes no sense - could you check and, if necessary, correct please ? Or, perhaps give the whole sentence to enable us to see things more clearly

"interlocutor" in English sounds far more pompous than its French counterpart. How about something like "does not hesitate to / is quick to hold (serious, etc.) conversations with the children he meets"?
Note from asker:
It was uncanny how the translation conjured up the actual man, quickness and seriousness, children and all

"makes a point of engaging the children he meets in meaningful conversation"

I translated "n'hésite pas" as "makes a point of", but I'm sure several other variants would work, such as "is always ready to..."

talk to them as equals

seeking to escape the over-intellectualism and rediscover his childlike intuition, he tends to treat the children he meets as equals

Conversational partner

Another idea, something along the lines of:

....treats the children he meets as real conversational partners.
