Italian term

lattante

Italian to English Law/Patents Economics smoking
"Nel mese di novembre il sindaco di Napoli ha vietato il fumo nei parchi comunali, in presenza di lattanti, bambini fino ai 12 anni e donne in gravidanza." Is this intended as an age range in legal parlance, to be translated as "young babies"? Babies can be weaned within a few weeks or a few years. Why didn't they just ban smoking in parks fullstop?
Its an economic report for tobacco companies.

I agree with you about banning smoke in parks and everywhere else...
For the transaltion, simply use "baby".

On my version of Hazon Garzanti it does give "baby as a translation! You are free to use it or not, but trust me it does!

Hazon Garzanti

Note from asker:
I just noticed that as I was putting in a temporary translation Ivana. The online Garzanti doesn't give "babies" Claudia. To ban smoking in parks is going too far in my opinion.
However, my author (a good writer) is obviously reproducing the text of the Mayoral ordinance.
thanks Claudia

Thanx!
agree Ivana UK : but seems unnecessary as text also specifies "in the presence of children under 12" - Oxfor Paravia translates "lattante " as "baby" & DeMauro = babies 0-6 mnths.

agree Maria Luisa Dell'Orto : Webster online: baby=1. A very young child (birth to 1 year) who has not yet begun to walk or talk.
