shift to this meaning of the verb
This is a tough one! My interpretation:
"In this language, the shift to this meaning of the verb is triggered by the presence of the preverbal adverb XXX."
In other words, the preverbal adverb XXX causes the verb to change its meaning to the meaning in question (apparently mentioned in previous text).

Based on your additional information, I'm guessing that "the meaning in question is that the event/action HAD already taken place in the past -- maybe like a plurperfect in English or Portuguese. SO the idea is:
The preverbal adverb XXX changes the meaning of the verb to imply that the event/action had already taken place in the past.

That didn't help, did it?
This is a footnote appearing after the beginning of a chaper on the "temporal morpheme". The preceding sentences are as follows:
XXX, algum tempo passado - ‘já’. Ocorre em construções clausais para salientar que o evento/ação descrito pelo verbo já tomou lugar no passado.*
