English term

defaulting

English Medical Medical (general) therapy
Tuberculosis remains a major public health
priority in the world with 8-10 million new cases
added every year1. In India, 14 million people are
affected and 2.2 million cases are added every year2.
Defaulting in tuberculosis treatment is one of the
major barriers to its control3. The objective of the
present analysis was to determine the factors that
influence defaulting behavior and to identify the
reasons for defaulting and irregular treatment.

What does "defaulting" mean here? Is it the same as abandoning/interrupting treatment? Is this term regularly used in the USA or only in UK English?

failing to attend for treatment; failing to continue a course of treatment at home.

Both are correct.

Actually, it\'s an expression which seems to be used for the third world mainly. It won\'t be too common in the UK, due to the low incidience of TB there.

agree Balasubramaniam L. : Thanks to the AIDS phenomenon, TB is sadly making a comeback in the "first" world also.

Thanks; bit of a disaster, really...I remember notices in London trams: "No spitting; penalty forty shillings"; that was to help prevent the spread of TB
agree RHELLER : yes, this is also relevant for the U.S. due to the large number of immigrants (around 10% of the population born in other countries); I am referring to 2005

agree aira07 : "defaulting" as a word in itself is commonly used in English (both US and UK). Ex. "Default on a loan." The use of the word has no direct connection to incidences of TB, and is used in many other contexts.

missing

As in missing treatment.

I believe this is not common in the U.S.

Here are some examples that show it means "missing treatment" - whether starated or not.

The treatment for tuberculosis is long-drawnout. Prescribed drugs have to be taken without fail continuously for six months or more. Very often after a few months of treatment, the patient feels better and thinks he is cured and stops taking medicine. This is a dangerous mistake, for the bacteria causing TB is very hardy and is not eliminated easily. It reappears after some time in a more virulent form.

The word default means failure to fulfil an obligation.

The word is used in situations like when you do not pay rent or an installment on a loan on time. You then become a defaulter.

I can\'t say I have come across the word used in the way it has been above very often.
