straight six

The secret to the car is its power to weight ratio – this steaming hot speedster weighs just 1495 kg but the classic BMW three-litre straight six churns out 250 kW.

Discussion

Samuel Murray Aug 12, 2011:
No, a V6 engine has six chambers but they are arranged in a V shape. A straight six also has six chambers, all in a row.
Talitha Wilsnagh Aug 12, 2011:
V6 A straight six is a V6 engine, usually 3.0 Litre. So, according to my knowledge it stays V6. I might be wrong.

A straight six is an engine with all six chambers in a row:

... hence my guess.

Kas's term "ses-in-lyn" does occur on the web (4 times), but it lead me to the Motor Mechanic exam paper of the Education Department, in which "ses-in-lyn" was given as an alternative for what appears to be the preferred term "[sessilinder-]gelidenjin".

Peer comment(s):

ses-in-lyn

This is the term given by the Motor Dictionary. It means that the engine has six cylinders in line and not, for instance, in a V configuration. A six-in-line engine would be a "ses-in-lyn-enjin".

agree Samuel Murray : Also called a "sessilinder-gelidenjin" (see my comment)
