Of course not, and I never did Sep 22, 2020

When you use your computer for professional purposes, it is essential that you always use the newest information, systems or tools, keeping everything up-to-date.
Otherwise, your work is compromised.
Working with an outdated Operating System is very risky.
You're exposed to vulnerabilities, and when your OS is obsolete you cannot work properly.

Regarding Windows, I believe that only versions 7 and 8.1 are still supported.
I use Windows 10, 1909 Version, and my computer is very recent.

No, but I used to be a late bloomer for most of my life. I did not switch to Windows 2000 until Windows XP was about a month away, and I did not switch to Windows XP for a number of years until I was forced to upgrade due to certain software no longer working on Windows XP. The only instance where a newer version of the OS was better than the older one was Windows XP vs Windows 2000. In all other cases, the newer version was worse and more limited. Oh, and my main office suite is Office 2003 (but I do have Office 365 installed for when files don't work).Collapse

I use Windows 8.1 and my plan is avoiding Windows 10 as much as I can. And even when I have to start using Windows 10, I certainly won't have those 930 monthly automatic updates enabled.

I have the latest MacOS (Catalina) on a separate partition of my hard drive but I never use it because it represents ZERO improvement on the older version I'm using now (El Capitan) and it disables various applications, some of them going way back, that I still need (such as: MS Office 2008 for Mac; the very first version of iWork, which has never been improved upon and that I still use for all my bookkeeping and accounts; an old version of Photoshop because I can't afford to buy a more recent ... Apple should stop trying to "improve" an operating system that was already perfect. Occasionally I boot into Catalina just to remind myself how much worse it is.

Avoiding Windows 10 updates Sep 22, 2020

I was largely happy with Windows 7, and upgraded to Win 10 only because my PC was becoming unreliable with increasing frequency of the blue screen of death due in part to various hardware issues. I wasn't able to find a new PC with Windows 7, so I resigned myself to buying a computer with Windows 10. After a second "update", the start screen announced "Windows 10 has a new look!". Links to my email client and browser were gone, and some older programs didn't work. I reverted to a previous restore point, went through various gyrations to prevent updates, and have had no regrets since. I have various anti-virus utilities and a VPN which impose a minimal reduction in speed, but which protect against malware and intrusions. When the current PC fails, I'll take it as a sign that I should retire.Collapse

Both my PC and my laptop are equipped with Windows 10 because both old ones crashed around the same time. The PC had Win 8 (okay), the laptop XP with which I was really happy. But Windows did away with XP, so I waited a few years. Then only Win 10 was available when buying a new device. Win 10 takes some getting used to, but the real problem are the unsolicited updates that just take place in the background without any notification. And you never know what might have been changed or even irretrievably lost due to these updates.

Turning off and the next morning turning the PC back on has been good for a few surprises because it sometimes takes quite a while to process these updates, sometimes even requiring a reboot. That is neither amusing nor comfortable, especially not when I have to complete and deliver a project at 8 a. m. or maybe at 8:30.

I understand Windows 8 was a huge deception for everyone, and many people went back to Win 7 (I was one). However, Windows 10 fixed this and went back to a style quite similar to Win 7. It's like Win 10 is the evolution of Win 7, and Win 8 is to be fogotten, along with ME and Vista, from history. Win XP, Win 7 and Win 10 are the positive side of that history.

I understand that perhaps Windows 7,or XP were close to being the best OS by Microsoft, BUT updates are a must for us translators since for the most part, we work with software. Having an updated system allows us to be safe from any security breaches, or errors. I haven't had a single problem with Windows 10.

I answered yes as I am working with a Laptop with Win 10, but actually I use still occasionally my previous one as backup computer which has Win 8.1 , and - very rarely, not for the internet - the penultimate with the unforgettable XP (hardwarewise everything is perfect, it is a Dell).

I cannot say that Win 10 is as unreliable as ME which drove me nuts and forced me after only one year to install instead 2000; actually, I don't dislike it, but as others said, the forced and unstoppable update function of Win 10 is everything but a useful and user friendly feature and is really unacceptable. I once lost my restore points (well, this can happen, the feature came back with the next update), but another time the OS decided to update itself when I was in the middle of an urgent job, and there wasn't anything I could do to stop it (after having clicked many times "later" the days before which didn't help). After that, I was so angry that I deactivated the automatic update altogether. Apparently, MS does consider its update more urgent than anything else, even what you're working on and even if you don't allow it for the moment.

Like it makes any difference whether you’re running Windows 10 or 8 or 3.1 or whatever🙄

It’s the applications that matter, not the operating system.

And ultimately all you need is a word processor and a web browser.

Not sure about that, Chris.

If your SO is outdated, you're more prone to attacks and exploits. Remember we all, in a certain moment in time, store confidential and material information of our clients.

Imagine if someone hacks you and all this data is leaked?

OK, fair point. I was exaggerating a little, but I would assume that if someone really wants to hack you then they will, whatever operating system or antivirus package you have.

(Anyway, how many of today’s teen hackers will even have heard of Windows 3.1, let alone know how to hack into it?!)
