My main PC is pretty much dedicated to work, although I also read the papers and check out Proz /Kudoz on it. I also have a backup PC, which mainly functions as a radio/sound system in the background when I'm not working on it. I also have a laptop for when I need to work away from home.

My main computer is pretty much dedicated to work. I also do my weekly shopping on it and Skype my younger daughter every day since she went to Cancun on work last year.

I have a separate computer for private use only. Therefore the use of my other computer is 100% business related.

~75%, but the rest is not recreational Sep 1, 2020

Most of what I do on the computer is related in some way to my business or to jobs themselves. I'm also in online school to become a Physical Therapist's Assistant (to be clear, just the prerequisites are online), so I am then on the computer much longer after (or before or on breaks from) work. I do almost nothing recreational on the computer, particularly because I don't do social media (some might count LinkedIn, but I don't, and I certainly don't use it "socially"). I have a Mac, so I always... See more

I have a Mac, so I always have 3-6 desktop screens running, one of which is my virtual machine if I'm working on something that requires Trados.Collapse

Volunteer work Sep 1, 2020

Besides translation work, my computer has a lot of files containing projects related to my local volunteer activities. In the charitable or hobby organizations I work with, I immediately volunteer for any of the 'verbiage' tasks: taking and distributing minutes; designing the newsletter; writing reports; and/or administering social media.

My guess is at least 75%. Activities like reading emails and interacting in social media are mainly related to work or in translator groups only. I don't play videogames, don't have accounts in any SM except for FB, only use Whatsapp for essential communications... and so forth.

I'm also studying part-time, so the majority of the rest of my computer use is related to that.

Of course it varies because my workload varies. I find I spend the same amount of time on the computer from day to day (too much), either working, or catching up with friends via private messaging systems or doing volunteer work, and then the occasional silly game when I need a break from work but can't go out to do gardening when the weather is bad.

I hate having to think up a title every time I post in a forum Sep 2, 2020

Put it this way: if I were buying a new computer today, I would write down 100% of the cost as a business-related tax-deductible expense. Even though it's likely that I would be using it for non-business-related purposes too, I wouldn't be purchasing it at all if it were only for personal use. In other words, 95% of what I do on my computer is business-related.

Other - it varies Sep 2, 2020

In this digital age, I cannot imagine anyone whose computer use is 100% work related.

Some activities are partly work and partly private anyway. Is this forum work-related? I am not sure all my activities on this site are actually work related, but I will probably drop this site altogether when I stop working.

In the same way, some of my activities on other translator forums are work-related, but many of them are marginal - they are the equivalent of chat round the coffee machine or in the canteen rather than directly work, but topics may or may not be relevant to my work. Postings may be relevant to someone else's work, but not mine, or simply letting off steam or relaxing.

And then there are all the other things I use my computer for - like Tom, I regard the desktop and the laptop as business-related, tax-deductible expenses. My first priority in choosing a computer is whether it is suitable for my work. however, I use them for all sorts of other things - the laptop when I am away from home and for backup, and the desktop as the main centre of all kinds of things!

Neither is exclusively for work or private business, and there is a fair overlap anyway, I find!

That would be telling Sep 2, 2020

A more interesting question might be how much of that time spent checking share prices and watching porn do we bill to the customer?

My new desktop computer is primarily used for business related activities, which include the translation and proofreading work itself, administration, searches on the internet, online meetings, reading of articles, even some social media activities.
Non businesses related activities are mostly in some or other way related to the business related activities.
I also have a notebook, but I rarely use it.
