3 out of 5 Quite good, especially for the young translator
Review by
Sone-Ngole Alvin Ngole I started with the demo version of this tool and later on bought the licence. It's quite easy to use and has the basic functionalities needed by a young translator. Compared to other CAT tools, there are a lot of improvements to make. It is however worth its price.
It is a good entry level tool for those new to the translation industry, especially its demo version. Unlike other cat tools, you can import and export TMs even with the demo version. The only limitation is the size of the TM.

Wordfast still has a long way to go in order to match other CAT tools. You will soon feel the need to buy other CAT tools: Trados which seems to be the most used by agencies, MemoQ which a good number of freelancers enjoy, Deja V, etc.

NB: for those living in developing economies (Africa, India, etc.), you don't need to buy Wordfast through Proz TGB. A 50% discount is offered through their website. On TGB, you only have 40% discount, and will wait for weeks for the buy to close.

How easy is it to learn?

I use this tool on an everyday basis only because my major client requires this; otherwise I would not use it
Review by
Natalie . This tool is rather a large step back as compared with Studio 2014 as it is rather primitive and lacks many useful features. Actually, nothing works as it should, and, moreover, the tool is extremely slow. Definitely not recommended.

Since it has become possible to work with TXML files in SDL Studio I avoid using WF at all.

Awful solution for displaying terms
Review by
Gyula Erdesz . Besides the "beta" feeling, my biggest concern is the way it handles and displays the terms:

There is no separate terminology window, only a bar at the bottom of then screen, where only one term is displayed at once.
This means: when you open a segment, you cannot have an overall view about all the recognized terms in it. If you are interested in the translation of e.g. the fourth term in the segment, you either move the mouse pointer on it or scroll to the fourth entry by the respective key combination.
So just to decide if you accept the proposed translation of the fourth term, you have to stop typing and move your mouse on it or hit at least 7 keys on the keyboard. This is simply absurd and terribly time consuming.

How easy is it to learn?

Gets the job done, on Mac or PC
Review by
John Di Rico . I’ve been using Wordfast Pro since its inception and it keeps getting better with each new release.
Here are the main advantages:
- It works natively on Mac (one of the main reasons I use it)
- Can handle virtually any type of file format
- Highly responsive tech support (they will create a filter for you if you need to translate an obscure file format like Mindjet)
- Excellent user groups on yahoo groups
- Good pricing that allows you free updates for three years, and a cheap renewal fee
- Great pricing if you live in a non-OECD country (50% off)
- Can integrate with cloud and/or remote TMs for free (no need for a freelance translator to buy a costly server license)
- Frequent upgrades and new features added based on user needs

Its drawbacks:
- The visual aspect could use a makeover
- The glossaries are stored in the system files, making it more complicated to export/import/manage
- Missing a target-only proofreading mode that can be updated directly

Despite the drawbacks, it's definitely worth trying out. You can use it for free for as long as you want, the only limitation is the size of the translation memory (500 TUs).

How easy is it to learn?

Excellent, easy to learn and use, reliable
Review by
Dave Bindon . This is a great CAT tool offering all the features a translator is likely to need at a very affordable price. Upgrades are free within the license period.

Wordfast Pro is very easy to learn and use so there's no need to pay extra for tutorials and support.

If you're new to CAT tools, the Wordfast Align package (free with the Wordfast Pro license) is a great way to convert your old translations into TMs which means that your license fee will quickly start paying for itself.

Highly recommended. I won't let any agency bully me into using a more expensive and less reliable competitor.
