English to Russian: Toyota first to price a fuel-cell vehicle General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Source text - English Toyota has made clear its belief that hydrogen-fuelled – not battery-powered – cars are the most viable replacement for fossil-fuel-burning vehicles. The company's most emphatic statement came at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show this month, where it unveiled the hydrogen-powered Mirai. The car, whose name derives from the Japanese word for "future", travels 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, refuels in just five minutes and emits only water vapour. Unlike other carmakers who have offered fuel-cell electric vehicles or FCEVs as lease-only propositions. Toyota is first to put a price on such a car, at $57,000 in the US. Though availability is initially limited to select markets in California. Toyota is building 12 hydrogen refueling stations across five states in the US northeast, with expectations of marketing the Mirai in that region after the initial rollout. Expect to see them on California roads in late 2015.
English to Russian: Tree killers General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Botany
Source text - English In 1998 a team from the US Forest Service set out to investigate the cause of large tree die-offs in the Malheur National Forest in east Oregon.
They identified affected areas in aerial photographs and collected root samples from 112 dead and dying trees, mostly firs. Tests showed all but four of the trees had been infected with the honey fungus Armillaria solidipes (previously known as Armillaria ostoyae).
When mycelia from genetically identical A. solidipes meet, they can fuse to form one individual. The researchers harnessed this ability, growing fungi samples in pairs in petri dishes. By observing which ones fused and which ones rejected each other, they found that 61 of the trees had been struck down by the same clonal colony - individuals with identical genetic make-up that all originated from one organism.
Translation - Russian
English to Russian: City of Manchester Stadium General field: Marketing
Source text - English The City of Manchester Stadium is a stadium in Manchester, England. It is also called the jihad Stadium, COMS or Eastlands. The stadium was designed by Arup and built by John Laing. It was first designed as part of Manchester's failed bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics. The stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games at a cost of £110 million. After the Games, it was turned into a football stadium. It became the home of Manchester City F.C. who moved there from Maine Road in 2003 after signing a 250-year lease.
The stadium is shaped like a bowl. It has two levels all the way around. There is a third level along the two side stands. As of the start of the 2010/2011 season, it is the fifth-largest stadium in the FA Premier League and the twelfth-largest in the United Kingdom, with 47,726 seats. The highest attendance for a football game at the stadium was on 5 December 2009 when 47,348 fans watched Manchester City play Chelsea. On 14 May 2008, it hosted the UEFA Cup Final.
Translation - Russian City of Manchester — это стадион в Манчестере, Англия. City of Manchester.
English to Russian: Whales General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Zoology
Source text - English Whales are large marine mammals which live in the ocean. Like other mammals, they breathe oxygen from the air, have a small amount of hair, and are warm blooded.
There are two basic kinds of whales, and about 100 species.
People use the word whale in different ways. Some use it for all Cetaceans including dolphins and porpoises. These people say that dolphins and porpoises were also whales, because they are also Cetaceans. Others separate out the dolphins and porpoises: common English-speaking people have never called them or thought of them as whales unless they are very large. Actually, there is no clear line between whales and dolphins.
Whales have been killed for meat and oil by whalers. However, many countries have laws saying not to kill whales anymore. Some countries, such as Iceland and Japan, do not have these laws. In other countries, such as the USA, only Eskimos and some American Indians may legally kill whales.
Translation - Russian
