These are medical reports, I can't figure out what the calf is doing there, does it mean something else in medical terminology? it is used 4 or 5 times the context doesn't help

Blood clots that develop in a vein are also known as venous thrombosis. DVT usually occurs in a deep leg vein, a larger vein that runs through the muscles of the calf and the thigh. It can cause pain and swelling in the leg and may lead to complications such as pulmonary embolism.

neutral  Charles Davis: As I said in the discussion I think mentions of "veau" meaning calf in the leg in relation to embolisms must be machine translations from English. I can't believe it can really mean that.
