Summary:Learn the basics and see some efficient tools (mostly freeware) that you need to transcribe or translate audio or video recordings efficiently.
Description
Would you like to expand your services to offer audio/video translation?

Do you get such requests from your clients and feel unsure about how to handle them?

Have you tried doing it with what you thought was 'adequate' hardware and software... and it took you a whole week to translate a 10-minute speech?

If you answered 'yes' to any or all the questions above, then this video course is for you. It will show you what is or should be used to do it efficiently. Special attention will be given to freeware options, so you can check your skill without any investment.

Please bear in mind that this is NOT a course in video translation for dubbing or subtitling, however it is an essential prerequisite if you ever intend to do it.
Target audience
Translators and/or interpreters who want to translate audio/video recordings
Anyone wanting to transcribe audio recordings in their language(s)
Translators who intend to learn video translation for dubbing or subtitling
Learning objectives
In this video you'll learn what it takes to translate audio/video recordings and how it can be done most efficiently.
Prerequisites
This course is based on Windows software. Though the ideas will be useful with other systems as well, such users will have to seek proper software on their own.

Care has been taken in narration so that translators who have English as a non-working language will understand it too.

Bio: Jose began translating video for dubbing EN>PT in 1987, coached by his best-client-to-become (who had a whole company to run, no time to go on translating). He developed his own technique for perfect metrics, and specialized in training/corporate videos, where quality requirements are very high. Only in 2004 he dared to venture into translation for subtitling. He soon realized that the technique was the same, however the art was different: each type of work required a completely different frame of mind, which he developed.

After having translated several hundred videos, facing numerous challenges and pitfalls, he compiled the basic guidance any translator or interpreter would need to get started on the right track in translating audio or video.

Dear Lucie,

As the name implies, this course covers the basics only, i.e. how to deal with AV recordings to get started.
The most common requests involving AV material are:
a) Transcribing;
b) Translating the full content;
c) Translating video for subtitling; and
d) Translating video for dubbing.

This course should get you ready for (a). Depending on your translation skills, it should get you ready for (b) as well.
However (c) and (d) require specific skills, NOT covered in this program, which only shows an example of each.
On the other hand, you'll need the knowledge from this course to get additional training for (c) and (d).

Regarding how many times you can watch it, this relies on Proz policies. AFAIK after you've bought it, you may watch it as many times as you want. As I couldn't find confirmation of this, you might submit a support ticket and ask the Proz staff about it. All I can say is that it's a self-standing 50-min video presentation.

Best regards,

Jose

Very serious and professional trainerFeb 10, 2015

Of course all trainers are serious and professional, but Mr Lamensdorf reads every feedback carefully, takes it seriously, and promises to improve his already good presentation.
As I mentioned in the feedback I gave, I believe this course will be beneficial to translators with very little science or technical background.
I would also like to thank Mr Lamensdorf's e-mailed response to my feedback.
