When she moved into his tiny house in Stroud, and took charge of his four small children, Mother was thirty and still quite handsome. She had not, I suppose, met anyone like him before. This rather priggish young man, with his devout gentility, his airs and manners, his music and ambitions, his charm, bright talk, and undeniable good looks, overwhelmed her as soon as she saw him. So she fell in love with him immediately, and remained in love for ever. And herself being comely, sensitive, and adoring, she attracted my father also. And so he married her. And so later he left her - with his children and some more of her own.

When he'd gone, she brought us to the village and waited. She waited for thirty years. I don't think she ever knew what had made him desert her, though the reasons seemed clear enough. She was too honest, too natural for this frightened man; too remote from his tidy laws. She was, after all, a country girl; disordered, hysterical, loving. She was muddled and mischievous as a chimney-jackdaw, she made her nest of rags and jewels, was happy in the sunlight, squawked loudly at danger, pried and was insatiably curious, forgot when to eat or ate all day, and sang when sunsets were red. She lived by the easy laws of the hedgerow, loved the world, and made no plans, had a quick holy eye for natural wonders and couldn't have kept a neat house for her life. What my father wished for was something quite different, something she could never give him - the protective order of an unimpeachable suburbia, which was what he got in the end.

The three or four years Mother spent with my father she fed on for the rest of her life. Her happiness at that time was something she guarded as though it must ensure his eventual return. She would talk about it almost in awe, not that it had ceased but that it had happened at all.

Mama miała trzydzieści lat i była jeszcze całkiem urodziwa, gdy przeprowadziła się do małego domku w Stroud, aby zająć się czwórką jego małych dzieci. Sądzę, że nigdy przedtem nie spotkała kogoś takiego jak on. Ten pedantyczny młodzieniec, z jego wielkopańskimi manierami i ambicjami, tą jego muzyką, stylem bycia, uroczy, błyskotliwy, no i niewątpliwie przystojny, zawładnął nią bez reszty, gdy tylko go ujrzała. Zakochała się w nim natychmiast i na zawsze. A ponieważ sama była niczego sobie, czuła i pełna atencji, również go pociągała. Tak więc poślubił ją, a potem porzucił, zostawiając jej swoje dzieci i te, których dorobili się wspólnie.

Gdy odszedł, zabrała nas do wioski i czekała na niego. Czekała przez trzydzieści lat. Nie sądzę, żeby zdawała sobie sprawę, dlaczego ją zostawił, chociaż powód wydawał się oczywisty. Bądź co bądź, była przecież wiejską dziewczyną, rozbieganą, rozkrzyczaną, rozkochaną. Ruchliwa i psotna niczym sroczka, wiła sobie gniazdko ze szmatek i błyskotek. Biegała radośnie w słońcu, wrzeszczała ze strachu, wściubiała we wszystko swój ciekawski nos, pałaszowała coś dzień cały albo i w ogóle zapominała o jedzeniu, zachód słońca żegnała swym śpiewem. Żyła według prostych reguł pól i łąk, świat był jej miłością, każdy cud natury przyciągał ją nieodmiennie, za to do domowych porządków nie miała zacięcia. Mój ojciec pragnął czegoś zgoła innego - bezpieczeństwa i ładu, które zapewnia nieskazitelny dom na przedmieściach... ona tego dać mu nie mogła. Znalazł to w końcu gdzie indziej.

Te trzy, może cztery lata, które Mama spędziła z ojcem, dawały jej siłę przez resztę życia. Chroniła wspomnienie swojego szczęścia tak, jakby miało zapewnić kiedyś jego powrót. Mówiła o tamtych czasach niemal z zadziwieniem; nie że się skończyły, ale że w ogóle się zdarzyły.

Hakkımda

Localization of systems and translation of documentation related to computers and IT technology in general. My projects included website localization for a major portal, interface for wordcounting software and complete localization of several minor system programs.

My other area of expertise is agricultural and construction machinery. Texts may be consulted by specialists from the Polish Institute of Agricultural Machinery.

Several years as a technical editor have given me good knowledge of technical aspects of localization, desktop publishing and word processing issues. I am capable of working with most available formats (HTML, XML, PDF, PUB, CDR, binary codes, source codes, proprietary translation memories etc.).

I believe that quality, reliability and discretion come first, before any financial considerations.
