Бьет значит любит? Пожалуй, правы те, кто верит этому расхожему, но спорному мнению, которое обычно высказывают доброжелатели, успокаивая жен, побитых мужьями. Или даже любовниками. Иной раз так говорят сами дамы, оправдываясь перед подругами, заметившими фингалы.
Вывод о тесной и благотворной связи насилия и любви стал итогом масштабных исследований, которые 17 лет вели антропологи из Университета Аризоны (Arizona State University). Правда, изучали они не совсем людей, а шимпанзе - наших ближайших генетических родственников. Вот эти человекообразные приматы, живущие в Африке, в национальном парке Танзании (Tanzania's Gombe National Park), и продемонстрировали изумленным ученым удивительные последствия рукоприкладства.
- Самцы шимпанзе общаются с самками без особой нежности - пинают их, щипают, кусают, дают оплеухи, - говорит Ян Гилби (Ian Gilby), один из исследователей. - Но мы заметили: если самец часто и регулярно бьет конкретную самку, значит она ему нравится. Как правило, именно эта самка становится "женой" и рожает ему детенышей. Обычно и трех лет не проходит, как побои приводят к прибавлению в семействе. Вот такая у приматов любовь.
А самцы, которые были менее агрессивные по отношению к самкам, оказались и менее востребованными в интимном смысле. Потому что самки тянулись главным образом к тем, от кого терпели побои. Занятно, но и в человеческих семьях такое не редкость. Бывает даже хуже - побои осложняются еще и пьянством самцов.

Beating is a sign of love? Perhaps, those who believe this popular but controversial opinion are right. This expression is usually said by well-wishers, calming wives beaten by their husbands. Or even lovers. Sometimes ladies themselves say it in a defensive manner after her friends notice she has a black eye.
Close and beneficial ties between love and violence were found out in result of extensive 17-year study conducted by anthropologists of the Arizona State University. However, they didn’t learn human behaviour but the behaviour of chimpanzees - our closest genetic relatives. Great apes which were experimented on live in Africa, in the Tanzania's Gombe National Park. The scientists recorded unexpectedly amazing effects of battering.
- Male chimpanzees communicate with females without much tenderness - kick them, pinch, bite, slap, - says Ian Gilby, one of the researchers. - But we have noticed that if the male often and regularly beats particular female, it means he likes her. As a rule, this female becomes his "wife" and gives birth to his babies. It takes less than three years for beatings to lead up to an appearance of a newborn. That's how primate love works.
Males who were less aggressive towards females, turned out to be less popular in the intimate sense too. Females were drawn mainly to those from whose beatings they’ve suffered. Interestingly, but this is not as uncommon in the human species as well. Sometimes it gets even worse - beating is further complicated by alcohol abuse.

Greatness is said to exist when one man's accomplishments are equal to those of several men. This definition applies to Plato, who is probably better known to the Occident than is any other philosopher. To him individuals in every century have gathered and become his disciples. His thoughts awakened such minds as Aristotle and Augustine, even as he himself was profoundly influenced by Socrates. Matured wisdom and balanced emotion are rare traits, but even more rare is a perfected integration of the two. Seldom does nature produce in the same individual an ordered intelligence accompanied with deep aesthetic feeling. But such a one was Plato, who lived wisely and beautifully and who strenuously opposed any other manner of living. His ability to penetrate into the limits of a subject and his successful multiplicity of effort demand our highest respect.
The uncontested facts concerning Plato's life are fewer than might be desired. Nevertheless more is known about him than about almost any other early philosopher. He was born on the island of Aegina in the year four hundred and twenty-seven B.C., on the twenty-seventh day of May. A son of Ariston and Perictione, he traced his paternal ancestry to King Codrus and his maternal ancestry to Solon, the great lawgiver of Greece. The name given him at birth was Aristocles, for his grandfather. The title "Plato" he acquired later. According to his earliest biographers, the title meant plateau and may have alluded either to his physique broadness of chest, shoulders and forehead or to the scope of his wisdom. There is more than one tradition which says that his birth was under special circumstances.
Living in Athens, of a prominent family, and favored by wealth, Plato found in this background a lavishness of intellectual stimulus, Athens, notwithstanding the distress of war, was the cultural center of Greece. Resplendent with magnificent buildings, Pericles and other important figures still living, the city was in itself a liberal education. And the youthful Plato must surely have heard and pondered the doctrines of the famous Athenian Sophists who held public discourse. His attainment of manhood corresponded with a dramatic period in the history of Athens: the overwhelming naval defeat followed by the blockade and famine which caused the death of thousands; the conclusion of the Peloponnesian war; the renowned attainments of her statesmen; and the production of the plays of Euripides, Aristophanes, and Sophocles. The period was one of strenuous political change, encompassing the revolution and the Tyranny of the Thirty, whose despots endangered free speech and indirectly caused the martyrdom of Socrates.
Whatever the time and circumstances of Plato's first meeting with Socrates, it was an epoch-making event for Plato as well as for the rest of the world. Most accounts concur in placing their meeting when the former was about twenty years old and Socrates sixty-two. At this time Socrates was considered one of the greatest expositors of moral philosophy. A legend relates that Socrates one night dreamed of a young swan which lit on his knee. Suddenly it put forth perfect plumage and flew heavenward, voicing music delightful to "both gods and men. Socrates realized that the swan in his dream was Plato when, on the following day, Plato's father presented the young man for instruction. Thereupon Socrates made a prophecy concerning Plato's future greatness. It is probable that Socrates was the direct cause of Plato's turning from the study of dramatic poetry to that of philosophy. Deep and lasting was the impression created by Socrates on his disciple, who revered him as guiding friend and guardian in all philosophic thought and action. It was his absorption of the Socratic spirit in the years just prior to his teacher's martyrdom, and the circumstances of the martyrdom itself, which laid the groundwork for the development of the great philosopher.
