The Basque Museum & Cultural Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates primarily from memberships, donations, and grants. Contributions are gratefully accepted and are tax-deductible. Memberships and all activities and educational programs are available for public participation.
Museum Store
A specialty shop featuring hand-crafted items from the Basque Country as well as local artisans’ items. They include jewelry, decorative relieves, music, books, linens, clothes and other Basque- themed merchandise. These can be ordered online at basquemuseum.com, by phone at 208.343.2671 or by stopping by during open hours. Proceeds from the store help underwrite projects and programs at the Basque Museum & Cultural Center.

About the Museum
The Basque Museum & Cultural Center preserves, promotes and perpetuates Basque history and culture. As the only Basque museum in the United States, our vision is to be an international leader showcasing Basque history and culture and connecting people to Basque experiences in the world.
History of the Museum Established in 1985, through the efforts of many individuals,
businesses and foundations, the Basque Museum & Cultural Center has continued to grow and expand its facilities and programs. The museum first opened in the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House, but in 1993 created the first permanent exhibits to occupy the gallery on the adjacent property at 611 Grove. The larger facility provided space for an expanded museum store, collection storage, and cultural center area for language classes and social gatherings.
Collections
The Basque Museum & Cultural Center has many collections of three-dimensional artifacts and archival materials, as well as a diverse library. In fact, there are more than 5,000 three-dimensional artifacts from furniture to toys to folk art, dance costumes and saddles. The archive contains a host of materials including manuscripts, letters, passports, obituaries, record albums, videos and more than 10,000 photographs, many of which are part of the Juanita Uberuaga Hormaechea Collection. The Basque Museum & Cultural Center also has an extensive oral history collection. Photographs, interview indexes and audio clips related to more than 100 interviews, are accessible to the public via the Museum’s website.
Exhibits
The Basque Museum & Cultural Center has a number of permanent and temporary exhibits within its gallery, focusing on the history of the Basque culture in Europe and the American West. Visitors can learn about the geography and industry of the Basque Country, immigration to the United States, lifestyle of Sheepherders, as well as the impact the Basque people have had on the city of Boise, the State of Idaho and the United States. Galleries are changed periodically to continually bring new pieces of Basque history and culture to the Basque Museum & Cultural Center’s visitors.
Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House
Boise’s oldest surviving brick home, the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House, is part of the Basque Museum’s campus. Built in 1864, it was home to the Jacobs family, early pioneers to the area, until 1907. By 1910, the house had become a Basque boarding house. Although three Basque families operated it, the Uberuagas ran it for the longest period from 1917 to 1969. Those who stayed there could surround themselves with familiar Basque food, dancing, and games, but most importantly, they could speak their native Basque language, Euskara. An historic restoration of the house was completed in 2005 and is open for guided tours daily in the Summer, weekly during Autumn, Winter & Spring, and by pre-scheduled appointments. Visitors can learn about early Boise history in the first two rooms and the rest of the house reflects the 1928 time period, while in its heyday as a Basque boarding house. It is furnished with many artifacts and historical pieces and includes some audio interpretation of members of the Uberuaga family.

Outreach
Ikastola
Boiseko Ikastola is the only total language immersion Basque cultural pre-school outside the Basque Country. It is an accredited pre-school with a nurturing, safe environment where children from all cultural backgrounds can learn Euskara, the
native Basque language.
Events
The Basque Museum & Cultural Center hosts a number of events throughout the year. They are a great way to learn about and participate in the Basque culture as well as contribute to the organization.
Annual Benefit Dinner & Auction – Spring
Good food and company, combined with a fun-filled evening, are sure to make this an event you won’t soon forget. Wonderful live and silent auction items help bring in needed funds for museum projects and for Boiseko Ikastola, the Basque cultural pre- school.
Winefest – Mid-August
Guests of this celebration can sample more than 100 varieties of wine, sample a delicious array of pintxos (appetizers), participate in the large silent auction, and see a performance by the Oinkari Basque Dancers. Proceeds benefit the educational programs and general operations of the Museum.
The Basque Block
This neighborhood, with historic and cultural significance to both the City of Boise and the Basque community, is located in the heart of downtown Boise on Grove Street between 6th and Capitol and is now commonly referred to as “The Basque Block”.
Visitors can shop for unique food and cooking items or purchase a wonderful bottle of wine at the Basque Market. Hungry? Try Leku Ona, specializing in fine dining and has a lively bar or visit Bar Gernika, featuring Basque and American food. The Basque Center, built in 1949 as a place to stage social and cultural gatherings, has an event hall and hosts the annual Basque Festival, San Inazio or Jaialdi every five years, on the block.
The Anduiza Fronton Building is a little-known part of the Basque Block. It was originally constructed as a Basque boarding house by the Anduiza family in 1914. Hidden deep inside is a fronton, or Basque ball court, where games of
pala with a wooden racket and hard rubber ball, are still regularly played. Leagues, tournaments & workshops are sponsored by the Boise Fronton Association.
San Inazio Festival &
Jaialdi (2015, 2020, 2025) - late

San Inazio Basque Festival is an annual celebration of the Basque culture through food, drink, music, sport and dance. A two-day festival featuring local musicians, dancers and athletes; it is a great opportunity for the Boise community to learn about and participate in the Basque culture. Jaialdi International Basque Festival takes its place every five years and incorporates not only domestic Basque music and dance troupes, but also international participants. This six-day festival draws thousands of visitors from around the globe held at multiple venues; it includes dancing, sports, many different types of food and merchandise. Both events are sponsored by The Basque Center.
Public Art and The Basque Block
Look closely as you stroll through the area. You’ll see a large Basque mural and entry pieces, entitled “Laiak” that belong to the City’s public art collection. Interpretive signs describing past and current activities are found on all of the buildings. Granite pieces engraved with surnames A to Z, songs and coats-of-arms are set randomly in the sidewalk.
On-Site Educational Presentations
Educational programs and tours provide an overview of Basque history and culture and include hands-on activities. Presentations are offered for tour groups as well as students. Recommended for students ten years through university level and beyond.
Basque Educational Trunks
These trunks were designed to meet Idaho Social Studies requirements for 4th grade, but are often used by music teachers and for many other subjects and levels. Each trunk includes hands-on objects, audiovisual materials, and a week’s worth of lessons and background information for teachers, as well as keepsake booklets for students.
Omenaldia Memorial Mass – Autumn
A memorial Mass to remember the friends and family members from the Basque community who have passed away during the prior year. Co- sponsored with Biotzetik Basque Choir.

El Museo y Centro Cultural Vasco preserva, promueve y perpetúa la historia y cultura vasca. Historia del Museo Se estableció en 1985 y gracias al esfuerzo de muchas personas,

La casa de Cyrus Jacobs-Uberuaga
La casa de Cyrus Jacobs-Uberuaga es la casa de ladrillo más antigua que perdura en Boise y es parte del Museo Vasco. Se construyó en 1864 y fue la casa de la familia Jacobs, pironeros del area hasta el 1907. En el 1910 la casa se convirtió en casa de huéspedes vascos. A pesar de que tres familias vascas llevaron el negocio, la familia Uberuaga es la que lo hizo durante más tiempo, desde 1917 hasta 1969. Los huéspedes vascos tenían acceso a comida, bailes y juegos vascos pero sobretodo, podían hablar su idioma natal, euskera. En el año 2005 se realizó una restauración de la casa y ese verano se abrió para visitas guiadas diarias y semanales en otoño, invierno y primavera y por cita. Los visitantes pueden aprender sobre la historia inicial de Boise a través de las primeras dos habitaciones, el resto de la casa refleja la vida en el 1928 en momentos de auge como casa de huéspedes. La casa tiene muebles, muchos artefactos, piezas históricas e incluye interpretaciones orales de los miembros de la familia Uberuaga.

Ikastola
“Boiseko Ikastola” es el único preescolar de inmersión en euskera fuera de Euskal Herria. Es una escuela acreditada con un ambiente seguro que fomenta la educación y donde niños de cualquier ascendencia pueden aprender euskera, el idioma

Fiesta del Vino - Mediados de Agosto
Los invitados de esta celebración pueden degustar 100 tipos de vino, probar una deliciosa selección de pintxos (aperitivos), participar en la gran subasta silenciosa y ver una actuación de bailes del grupo Oinkari. Las ganancias benefician a los programas educativos y al funcionamiento general del museo.
La Calle Vasca
Este barrio, con importancia cultural e histórica en la ciudad de Boise y en la comunidad vasca, se encuentra en el corazón del centro de la ciudad en la calle Grove entre las calles 6th y Capitol y se conoce como ̈La Calle Vasca ̈.
Los visitantes pueden comprar comida y artículos de cocina únicos o comprar una maravillosa botella de vino en el Basque Market. ¿Tienes hambre? Prueba Leku Ona, un restaurante especializado en alta cocina que cuenta con un bar de buen ambiente o visita el Bar Gernika con comida vasca y americana. El Centro Vasco, construido en el 1949 para celebrar reuniones sociales y culturales, que tiene un auditorio o salón y acoge el festival vasco anual de San Inazio, o Jaialdi cada cinco años, en La Calle Vasca.
El edificio del frontón Anduiza es una parte poco conocida de la calle vasca. Fue construido originalmente por la familia Anduiza como pensión para vascos en 1914. Dentro, bien escondido está el frontón, o la cancha de pelota
vasca, donde aún se disputan regularmente partidos de pelota con pala de madera y pelotas de goma dura. La Asociación del Frontón de Boise patrocina las ligas, torneos y cursillos.
Festival de San Ignacio y Jaialdi (2015,2020,2025) Finales de Julio.
El festival vasco de San Ignacio es una celebración anual de la cultura vasca a través de la comida, bebida, música, deporte y baile. Es un festival de dos días que presenta a músicos locales, bailarines y deportistas; se trata de una maravillosa oportunidad para la comunidad vasca para aprender sobre la cultura vasca y participar en ella. El festival Internacional Jaialdi tiene lugar cada cinco años e incorpora no solamente música y compañías de baile vascos nacionales sino también internacionales. Este festival de seis días, atrae miles de visitantes de todo el mundo y tiene lugar en varios sitios; incluye bailes, deportes, varios tipos de comida y mercancía o productos. El Centro Vasco patrocina ambos eventos.
Arte Público y la Calle Vasca
Presta atención cuando camines por La Calle Vasca. Verás un gran mural vasco y unas piezas a la entrada que se llaman ̈Laiak ̈ que pertenecen a la colección de arte público de la ciudad. En todos los edificios se encuentran carteles interpretativos que describen el pasado así como actividades del presente. En las aceras se pueden ver piezas de granito grabadas con apellidos de la A a la Z, canciones y escudos aleatoriamente.
Presentaciones Culturales
Los programas educativos y los tours proveen una visión general de la historia y la cultura vasca e incluyen actividades prácticas. Las presentaciones están disponibles para grupos y estudiantes. Se recomiendan para alumnos de 10 años en adelante.
Baúles Educativos Vascos
Estos baúles se diseñaron para cumplir con los requisitos de los estudios sociales de Idaho para los estudiantes de cuarto curso, pero a menudo los profesores de música y de otras materias y cursos los usan también. Cada baúl incluye objectos, materiales audiovisuales, materiales para que los profesores enseñen durante una semana así como también cuadernos de recuerdo para los alumnos.
Misa de Homenaje - Otoño
Es una misa de homenaje para recordar a los amigos y familiares de la comunidad vasca que han fallecido en el año anterior. Esta misa es co-patrocinada por el coro “Biotzetik”.

I was born in the Basque Country where I learned Basque and Spanish. I graduated in 2000 with a B.A in Basque language and Literature and again in 2003 with a Primary Education degree. I taught Basque language full time for 4 years (16 and older and all levels of Basque including the EGA exam) until I moved to the USA in 2003. In the USA I first taught Spanish at the University of Idaho through the USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium) program and then I taught Basque at the Boiseko Ikastola Basque preschool. I received my M.A. in Spanish in 2006 and I have taught at Boise State University teaching all levels if Spanish and Basque culture workshops during the last 10 years. I have taught Basque language at the Basque museum from 2008 to 2013. I also become the first Basque language coordinator in the USA and Canada through NABO (The North american Basque Organization) during those years.
I have translated a 100 page-book from Spanish to Basque and several documents from English to Spanish and Basque as a volunteer. I have volunteer as an Interpreter with refugee families and also edited translations and translate improvised verses from Basque to English.
I currently work as a freelance translator for the Idaho Health and Welfare Services.
I learned Portuguese in the USA and Brazil in 2013 and I have traveled to Brazil for 3 summers.
I love languages, translating them, teaching them, traveling and meeting new people.
