Source text - French Chacun sait que l'Egypte des Pharaons, comme nation, comme État, comme centre d'une civilisation avancée et originale, n'est point née d'un seul coup. Au cours d'une longue préhistoire que l'on devine, le monde égyptien s'est en effet lentement constitué à partir de groupes humaines sans lien politique, et de moeurs fort diverses: chasseurs du désert, piroguiers du Nil, agriculteurs primitifs, bergers des marais. Lorsque ces peuplades, dont chacune avait ses propres rites and ses propres mythes,eurent été définitivement unifiées en un seul État, à l'aube du IIIème millénaire avant J.C., la religion traditionnelle du royaume représenta la juxtaposition des principaux systèmes propres aux groupements primitifs. Puis, avec le temps, l'interaction de chacun de ces systèmes aboutit assez vite à des synthèses théologiques, savantes et complexes. Car il n'y avait rien d'exclusif dans la pensée égyptienne: on concevait fort bien qu'une même réalité pût être saisie et définie par des mythes for différents, par des images variées. Aucune croyance ne rendait nécessairement les autres inacceptables.
Translation - English Everyone knows that the Egypt of the Pharaohs; as a nation, a state, the center of an advanced and original civilization, was not born in one fell swoop. During a long prehistorical period, we surmise that the Egyptian world was in fact, slowly created from groups of humans, without political affiliations, and a wide variety of customs: hunters from the desert, canoers from the Nile, primitive farmers, and shepherds from the marshlands. When these tribes, each having their own rites and myths, had been, at the dawn of the 3rd millennium B.C.E., definitively unified into one single state, the kingdom's traditional religion represented the juxtaposition of the primary systems' own distinct, primitive groups. Subsequently, with time, the interactions of each of these systems came to fruition quite quickly from complex, theological, and scholarly syntheses. Since there was nothing exceptional in Egyptian thought: we understand very well, that the same situation could be applied and defined by very different myths and diverse imagery. No belief necessarily rendered others unacceptable.
