NOTE D’INTENTION
SHAKESPEARE NOW & THEN
Le texte de Shakespeare est atemporel. Magnifique, il ne nécessite en anglais aucun ajustement, aucune adaptation, comme l’a prouvé le film de Baz Luhrmann, Romeo Juliet. Mais il permet et appelle un traitement scénique et dramaturgique sans cesse renouvelé.
Chaque mise en scène se nourrit de cette force et, à travers elle, questionne son époque. À quoi servent la jeunesse et la beauté dans un monde vieillissant et laid ? À quoi sert l’amour dans une société dominée par la discorde ? Que ce soit dans la Vérone renaissante ou en Palestine aujourd’hui, des Montaigu et des Capulet continuent à se déchirer et à offrir au Minotaure de leur médiocrité des enfants qui n'avaient d’autre rêve que de s’aimer.
Sur scène :
Nous verrons Roméo et Juliette traverser les épreuves et s’aimer, comme l’a voulu Shakespeare. Mais ils vont aussi traverser les siècles et se métamorphoser. De l’Italie renaissante à la Palestine actuelle, en passant par le Paris de l’Occupation, la New York de Bernstein, les conflits ethniques des Balkans, le génocide rwandais, et même cette énorme boucherie que fut 14-18, où un monde régi par des vieux s’est vengé de son impuissance sur toute une génération de jeunes gens.
NOTRE LECTURE :
Comment une société en crise, qui ne parvient plus à sortir de la spirale de la violence qu’elle a mise en place et qui menace de la détruire, décide-t-elle de sacrifier deux de ses plus beaux et plus jeunes éléments pour retrouver la paix ? Une paix qui, de surcroît, ne durera peut-être pas plus longtemps que le temps d’un enterrement et de l’inauguration d’un monument aux morts…

STATEMENT OF INTENT
SHAKESPEARE NOW & THEN
Shakespeare's play is timeless. Magnificent in its original form, it requires no adjustment or adaptation, as Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo Juliet so clearly demonstrated. That said, it is also highly flexible and responds well to new approaches in terms of its staging and dramatic treatment.
Every production is nourished by this strength and through it can question any given era. What is the point of youth and beauty in an ageing and ugly world? Where is the place for love in a society dominated by discord? Whether in Renaissance Verona or today's Palestine, the Montaigus and Capulets continue to tear each other apart; they offer their children, whose only dream was the freedom to love each other, to the Minotaur of their own mediocrity.
On stage:
We will see Romeo and Juliet go through ordeals and love each other, just as Shakespeare wanted. But they will also go through centuries and be metamorphosed. From Renaissance Italy to today's Palestine, through occupied Paris, Bernstein's New York, the ethnic conflicts of the Balkans, Rwandan genocide and even the dreadful slaughter of 1914-18, in which a world run by the elderly avenged its impotence using an entire generation of young people.
OUR READING:
How does a society in crisis, that is no longer able to leave the spiral of violence it has created and which threatens to destroy it, decide to sacrifice two of its most beautiful and youngest members to bring back peace? A peace, moreover, that will perhaps last no longer than the time of a burial and the inauguration of a monument to the dead…
