child n. There is no definitive definition of a child: the term has been used for persons under the age of 14, under the age of 16, and sometimes under the age of 18 (an *infant). Each case depends on its context and the wording of the statute governing it. For the purposes of the Children Act 1989and the Family Law Act 1996, a child is a person under the age of 18.

Haklısınız kafa karıştırıcı. Türkiye'de cezaevleri çocuk ve gençlik cezaevleri (children and youth prisons) diye geçiyor ve 18 yaşından küçüklerin kaldığı çocuk koğuşları ve 18-21 yaş arasının kaldığı gençlik koğuşları bulunuyor. Ancak yurtdışında çoğu ülkede böyle bir ayrım yapilmadan "juvenile prisons" her iki grup icin kullaniliyor (cocuk ve ergenleri kapsiyor), ozellikle ayrim belli ise children kullaniyorlar, degilse juvenile. Soruda ozellikle ergen gectiginden "juvenile" daha dogru olacaktir.

juvenile offender: A person between the ages of 10 and 17 who has committed a crime (see DOLI CAPAX); an offender between the ages of 14 and 17 is known as a young offender. A child (aged between 10 and 14) cannot normally be tried on indictment (even for an *indictable offence) except when charged with homicide.

Size ilkel bir soru gibi gelebilir ama ben merak ettim. Burada {children, juvenile} sözcüklerinden hangisini kullanacaginiza nasil karar verirsiniz? Sözlüge göre ikisi de kullanilabilir, gibi geliyor. Hukukçulara mi sormak lazim acaba?
