Przykładowo - sprzedaż firmy Coca-Cola do detalu to będzie wolumen Coca-Coli, które kupują sieci handlowe typu Tesco, natomiast sprzedaż do gastronomii to będzie wolumen kupowany przez sieć fast-foodów typu McDonald. Podobnie jeśli firma produkująca kosmetyki sprzedaje szampony do salonów fryzjerskich i do sklepów kosmetycznych (lub przez stoiska kosmetyczne w supermarketach), to salony fryzjerskie nie będą kanałem detalicznym (ale supermarkety to już będzie 'sprzedaż do detalu')
