Situational Determinants of Prosocial Behaviour: When will people help?
Environment: Rural vs Urban
Definitions
Urban - Overload Hypothes is the theory that people living in cities are constantly being bombarded with stimulation and that they keep to themselves in order to avoid being overloaded by it.
* People in rural centers are more likely to engage in prosocial behaviour than people in urban areas.
Example: my friend broke his arm biking on Nose Hill and ran to the nearby road and tried to flag down a driver. Nobody stopped but luckily an ambulance soon arrived.
* Why are urban dwellers less likely to engage in prosocial behaviour? Urban-overload hypothesis -> we block things out because there is too much stimulus in the city.
* Evidence supports the urban-overload hypothesis more than it does the idea that urban dwellers are less social than others. ie) an urban dweller in a rural setting is more likely to provide help
