W drzeworycie wzdłużnym tło wycinano dłutem wzdłuż słojów w drewnie miękkim (lipa, jabłoń, świerk).
W drzeworycie poprzecznym (wynalezionym przez Thomasa Bewicka około 1790 roku) całość klocka cięta jest rylcem w poprzek słojów w twardym drewnie"
