Nadlew to technologicznie niezbędna część odlewu. W stanie płynnym w nadlewie "czeka sobie" materiał, który jest dostarczany do wnętrza formy w miarę kurczenia się materiału przy krzepnięciu. Gdyby tego nadlewu nie było, to wykonany detal miałby zbyt słabe ścianki (za mała gęstość materiału) lub wręcz pęknięcia czy niedopełnienia i byłby nie do użycia.

The resin, or raw material for injection moulding, is usually in pellet or granule form, and is melted by heat and shearing forces shortly before being injected into the mould. The channels through which the plastic flows toward the chamber will also solidify, forming an attached frame. This frame is composed of the sprue, which is the main channel from the reservoir of molten resin, parallel with the direction of draw, and runners, which are perpendicular to the direction of draw, and are used to convey molten resin to the gate(s), or point(s) of injection. The sprue and runner system can be cut or twisted off and recycled sometimes after granulation right next to the mould machine. Some moulds are designed such that it is automatically stripped from the part through action of the mould.

In foundry work, a Sprue is the passage through which metal is poured into a mold. The term can also refer to the excess metal on a rough casting, which solidified in the sprue hole. The term has the identical usage in the plastic injection-molding industry.
Sprues can serve as filters, heat sinks and as feeders. Bronze in particular has a high shrinkage rate as it is cooling, a sprue can continue to provide molten metal to the casting, providing it is large enough to retain its heat and stay liquid, as metal in the main casting cools and shrinks. The design of the sprue and runner system can be also utilized to trap unwanted dross and sand from continuing into the main cavity, this may include adding porous material to the runners, or designing the sprue to eject the dross to the side of the sprue (cyclone effect).
